A Brief History of Twenty Years in Business
Dennis Sweeney began serving Saab owners in 1986. The business was based on the need for affordable new and used parts for the widely dispersed, but loyal, Saab customers. 1986 coincided with the introduction of the now "classic" Saab 900 Turbo Convertible and the Saab 9000 Turbo Sedan. Both these cars have become legendary among auto enthusiasts for performance, reliability and safety engineering. In those days, all cars were less complex, and many Saab enthusiasts were do-it-yourself mechanics, so in the pre-internet days, having parts a phone call away was very convenient.
The first years' operations were in several owned and rented locations. In 1988 a 4000 sq ft building with fenced parking area was located in the village of Wilpen, Ligonier Township. Since most of the parts were shipped to distant customers, a typical highway frontage retail location was not a high priority.
By 1990, local Saab drivers expected us to do service as well as parts, so an experienced mechanic was hired. Next, a used car license was obtained to meet the demand for quality "road tested" Saab cars.'
A significant majority of car owners take their cars to independent repair shops after the new car warranty has expired. Few new car manufacturers offer any support for the independent shops. So, early on, Sweeney Inc. developed a network of friends in other independent shops around the country, and some dealers who wanted our business, as well as a few good friends at the Saab USA headquarters. We continually upgrade the diagnostic computers and software to troubleshoot and repair whatever problems our customers may encounter.
When SAAB introduced the 9.2X model to fill the need for an AWD car, and based it on a Subaru Legacy chassis, we decided to include all models of Subaru in our service speciality.
Once a loyal relationship is established with a customer and their family, it is hard to turn down a request to "inspect my van" or "look at my Ford truck" Since 95% of all work in a shop is general maintenence, oil change, brakes, tires, exhaust, tune up and air conditioning, we make it a policy to work on any vehicle if we can do the job. We have done an engine swap in a Chevy Blazer, cylinder head on a Mercedes 280, rebuilt the transmission on a Case Backhoe, Volvo, Cadillac, Jeep, Dodge Caravan and our mechanics love to work on ATV's.
